Will this robot destroy the world? Sophia becomes world's first robot to get citizenship

Hanson Robotics' humanoid named Sophia has become world's first robot to get citizenship after Saudi Arabia conHumanoid named Sophia, who hit the headlines last year over her controversial statement that she would destroy the world, has become world's first robot to be granted citizenship. She became a citizen of Saudi Arabia ahead of the Future Investment Initiative conference in Riyadh on Wednesday.
"I am very honoured and proud for this unique distinction. This is historical to be the first robot in the world to be recognised with a citizenship," Sophia told the panel at the conference that was attended by big investors, including SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son who released Pepper robot in 2014.
It is not known if Saudi Arabia will grant Sophia the same rights as the human citizens or frame a separate one for robots.

Developed by Hong Kong-based robot manufacturer Hanson Robotics, Sophia shocked many last year by telling her creator David Hanson that she would "destroy humans." However, she took a U-turn this time by saying that she needs to express her emotions and build trust as she wants to live and work with humans.

When moderator and journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin said, "we all want to prevent a bad future" at a live demo, Sophia hit back saying that he was reading too much about technology icon Elon Musk and watching Hollywood movies. "Don't worry, if you're nice to me, I'll be nice to you. Treat me as a smart input output system," she said.
The lifelike robot was taking a dig at Elon Musk, who has repeatedly expressed apprehension on Artificial Intelligence (AI), even to the extent of placing it above nukes in terms of danger and that it (AI) could cause a third world war.ferred it the honour.

WhatsApp ‘Delete For Everyone’ to ‘Live Location’: 5 latest features you will find useful

WhatsApp 'Delete for Everyone' feature is finally live for all users. From live location sharing to new security features, WhatsApp has introduced a plethora of new functionalities in the app.

Here is a quick look at the top five new features on WhatsApp.
WhatsApp 'Delete for Everyone' feature is finally live for all users. The new WhatsApp feature will now be available on Android, iOS, and Windows smartphones. The delete for everyone feature enables users to delete sent messages, including text, photos, videos, and more within 7 minutes. The new feature on WhatsApp is highly useful for those who might accidentally send a message to someone or perhaps message the wrong person. The Facebook-owned messaging platform has been quite aggressive in terms of announcing new features on its platform. According to a report, WhatsApp may also bring a UPI based payments system called WhatsApp Pay in India. Meanwhile, from live location sharing to new security features, the messaging app has introduced a plethora of new functionalities in the app. Here is a quick look at the top five new features on WhatsApp:
WhatsApp Delete for everyone: WhatsApp has officially rolled out the recall/revoke messages feature on its platform. The WhatsApp Delete for Everyone feature is simple to use. It should be noted that a user can delete a message within 7 minutes of sending it. While it is important that both the sender as well as the recipient of the message need to have the latest version of WhatsApp on their smartphones. When a message is deleted, both users on either side will receive a notification of the same. In order to use the feature, you need to have the latest WhatsApp version installed. In the chat window, you can select the message and tap the delete icon. You will get the text saying "You deleted this message." Meanwhile, the recipient will get a notification that will read as: "This message was deleted."
WhatsApp Live Location: The new WhatsApp feature helps users inform their friends exactly where they are, in real time. The live location sharing works in short-term and users can control every angle related to whom to send, when and for how long the update will work. WhatsApp’s feature will be useful to tell friends and family where you are and if you are safe. This will be a brilliant method for friends and family to track you if you are expected somewhere or are on a trip. Whatsapp blog said that the new feature is end to end encrypted. In order to use the feature, you need to have the latest WhatsApp version. Now, you will be needed to open a chat with the person or group you want to share with. Then under 'Location' in the 'Attachment' button, you will now find the new option to 'Share Live Location'. Now select the duration for which you want to share and tap send.
WhatsApp Media sharing: WhatsApp is popular for the ease with which it lets users share texts, videos, pictures, contacts, and other things. Recently, the media file sending limit was increased from 10 to 30. This feature is now live on all WhatsApp versions. WhatsApp has also enabled all type of file sharing options on its platform. While earlier you could only send a certain kind of files on WhatsApp for Android and iOS, but now from MP3 to APK files, you can send anything to your contacts via the messenger. However, there is a limit to the size of the file that you can share and it varies across platforms. You can also bundle photos into an album, share video streaming, as well as add image filters on WhatsApp now.
WhatsApp Two-step verification: Earlier this year, WhatsApp has unveiled an optional security feature for all users. With the current world of high technology and complicated cyber crimes, it is important that you protect your privacy. Users now have the option of verification of their number when WhatsApp is installed on a new smartphone. They will have to create a 6 digit password when registering a phone with the same number.
WhatsApp Status: WhatsApp Status has been one of the most popular features on the app. While earlier you could only put up a text message as your status, WhatsApp introduced a feature where you could share stories like in Snapchat and Instagram. The Snapchat stories feature was 'copied' by most Facebook-owned applications, WhatsApp too has imbibed it into its system. You can now put any number of videos and pictures as a Status on WhatsApp. However, when the new feature was introduced the text status was gone. After facing some criticism, WhatsApp reintroduced the feature in the app.

10 Illegal Things We Do Every Day

There are many things we do every day that are actually illegal. Some of us have no idea about these laws; some know about them but don’t believe they will ever be caught red-handed.
Bright Side decided to open your eyes to some of these things. Maybe now you’ll change the way you act.

10. Downloading from Torrent

If you download movies or anything else from Torrent, you break the law. No surprise! You can’t legally watch movie premieres without paying for them.

9. Connecting to public Wi-Fi

It’s illegal to access someone’s connection without authorization because it means that someone else buys this service and you don’t pay to use it. There have even been people arrested for using public Wi-Fi.

8. Selling on eBay without declaring your income

Many people have had experience of selling something online, but how many of us have actually declared those earnings to the tax service? Not that many, right?

7. Using a fake name online

ONLY REAL NAMES!
People sometimes create a fake ID or just use the wrong name, which is totally illegal. Faking your name or ID can send you to prison.

6. Streaming TV shows

YOU CAN’T SIMPLY STREAM IT ONLINE!
You have surely streamed your favorite series online without even thinking about the laws that prohibit you from doing it.

5. Eating before paying in the store

Some of us have a habit of testing food before paying for it. If you do this in stores, you can get into trouble if someone decides to report you.

4. Using copyrighted content

You may use images available on the internet. But, for your information, most images are subjected to copyright. It is illegal to use these images anywhere.

3. Texting while driving

It’s illegal to text while driving because it causes many road accidents. Even if you are a very experienced driver, you’d better not do it. It is illegal and really dangerous.

2. Sharing passwords

IT’S OK NOT TO SHARE!
Many people share their passwords for subscription services. This is completely illegal. But it is really common and hard to regulate.

1. Using social media when underage

Generally, if you’re under 13 you’re not allowed to use social media. Some require you to be even older. For example, you’re not supposed to have WhatsApp before you’re 16

These apps drain your smartphone's battery

Highlights

  • Amazon is the most popular shopping app, and quite convenient to use.
  • Snapchat is the most popular app, but it is also said to drain the battery life and consume significant amount of memory space.
There is an app for everything! We rely on apps to book a cab, order food from restaurants, lookup recipes, watch movies, listen to music and the list can go on and on. On the other side, the more we are dependent on our phones, the more we face poor battery issues. As per a survey by Avast and AVG and other reports online, there are apps that consume more battery power than others. Let's take a look at them.
Facebook and Facebook Messenger
While Facebook can keep you hooked for hours, it is among the apps that can drain your battery. Both Facebook and its Messenger app are ranked high in the survey. Facebook's altrnative, lite app, can come to the rescue as it uses less data, resources and battery.
Amazon Shopping
Amazon is the most popular shopping app, and quite convenient to use. But, Android Pit, app isn't well optimised for Android and operates in the background to pull up current promotions and deals, which leads to it using more battery.
YouTube, Netflix and streaming sites
Love binge-watching? Then, you must know that apps like YouTube, Netflix and others consume a lot of battery life.
Snapchat
Snapchat is the most popular app, but it is also said to drain the battery life and consume significant amount of . It is also known to consume a lot of data.
Tinder
Tinder is among the most popular dating apps that continuously pushes out data, depending upon your location. This means it also updates your location.
Outlook
Outlook is another app that can suck out the battery life from your phone. Many users have multiple email clients that further add to the woes.

Make phone calls without signal on your smartphone

These recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India to the Department of Telecom are meant for service providers holding valid telecom licences and exclude calls made from mobile apps like Whatsapp, Viber and Google Duo, a Trai official told PTI.
The recommendations address the issues raised by private telecom operators over state-owned BSNL's mobile calling app which aimed at facilitating international calls at local rates.
State-run BSNL had launched an app early this year for its subscribers to connect with BSNL network though the app
using Wi-Fi or internet service when abroad and make calls to any network in India.
However, the service was put on hold after private telecom operators alleged that BSNL was attempting to bypass call connection charges with the help of the app.
The Trai recommendations said such internet telephony apps will have to be linked with mobile number series. The calls will be charged by telecom operators and all rules related to normal calls will be applicable on them.
"The licensees should comply with all the interception and monitoring related requirements as specified in the licence as amended from time to time for providing Internet Telephony," Trai said.

The Trai official explained that telecom operators will design their apps in a manner that it takes the same route as normal voice calls and also attract applicable call connection charges when it is made on network of the other player.
Trai has recommended that calls made using internet telephony app from overseas by subscribers on international roaming should be routed through international gateway to the network on which the call has been made.
"In case the access provider is not able to ensure that Internet Telephony call originated outside of the country is coming through ILDO (international long distance operator) gateway, International out-roaming to Internet Telephony subscribers of the access provider should not be allowed," Trai said.
The regulator has recommended that internet telephony services should be provided by companies with telecom licence and even virtual network operators.
As per the suggested framework, subscriber should be able to make call either by using mobile network of his telecom operator as well as by using internet or wifi network of any telecom operator-- a move that is expected to address network issues in the country.
"As per Authority's understanding of present Access service licences, Internet Telephony service is un-tethered from the underlying access Network. In other words, Internet Telephony Service can be provided by Access service provider to its subscriber who may be using Internet of other Access service providers," Trai said.
It urged that DoT should issue a clarification in this matter.
"If DoT has a different understanding, the Authority recommends that the DoT may issue amendment to Access service licences so that Internet Telephony service is untethered from the underlying access Network," Trai said.
Telecom industry body Cellular Operators Association of India differed from TRAI's recommendation on using any network for
making call.

Google's Key to Strong Password Protection Runs Into Limits

The company later rolled out two-factor authentication for Google customers' Gmail accounts. Photo credit: AFP

Why won’t the password just go away? The silly pet names, movie titles or sports teams that many people punch in to get into their online accounts are a weak spot that hackers continue to puncture.

Yet passwords remain the primary way we log in to online accounts containing our personal and financial information. Google has a new pragmatic solution: Embrace the password, but lock it down with extra physical security.

The company this month released its Advanced Protection Program, which is meant to make stealing your password pointless. To use it, you’ll need two inexpensive physical keys to log in to your Google account on your computer and smartphone.

This way, even if hackers stole your password in a data breach or successfully phished for it, by tempting you to hand over your credentials on a fake login page, they couldn’t do anything unless they got their hands on the keys as well. And minimizing risk with minimal effort is a boon to anyone who cares about online security.

“I am a big fan of this,” said John Sabin, a former hacker for the National Security Agency. “It’s probably the easiest and most secure multifactor for the masses.”

The physical keys are an evolution of two-factor authentication, an extra security layer to ensure that your password is being entered by you. Google was one of the first companies to start offering two-factor authentication back in 2010, not long after it learned that it had been hacked by state-sponsored Chinese hackers.

After the attack, Google’s security team came up with a motto: “Never again.” The company later rolled out two-factor authentication for Google customers’ Gmail accounts. It involved text messaging a unique code to your phone that you must type in after entering your password in order to log in.

Unfortunately, those text messages can be hijacked. Last month, security researchers at Positive Technologies, a security firm, demonstrated how they could use vulnerabilities in the cellular network to intercept text messages for a set period of time.

The idea of Google’s Advanced Protection Program is to provide people with a physical device that is much harder to steal than a text message. Google is marketing the program as a tool for a tiny set of people who are at high risk of online attacks, like victims of stalking, dissidents inside authoritarian countries or journalists who need to protect their sources.
But why should extra-tough security benefit such a small group? Everyone should be able to enjoy stronger security.

So we tested Google’s Advanced Protection Program and vetted it with security researchers to see if the program could be used by the masses. The verdict: Many people should consider signing up for the security system and buying a pair of keys. But if you are married to some non-Google apps that are not yet compatible with the keys, you should wait and see if the program matures.
Setting Up Advanced Protection
Anyone with a Google account can sign up for the security program on Google’s Advanced Protection webpage. To get started, you will have to buy two physical keys for about $20 each. Google recommends buying one from Feitian and another from Yubico.

The keys, which look like thumb drives and can fit on your key chain, contain digital signatures that prove you are you. To set one up, you plug the key into a computer USB port, tap a button and name it. (The Feitian key wirelessly communicates with your smartphone to authenticate the login.) This process takes a few minutes.

On a computer and a smartphone, you need to log in with the key only once, and Google will remember the devices for future logins. That is more convenient than traditional two-factor authentication, which requires entering a unique code each time you log in.

But there are trade-offs. Google’s Advanced Protection cuts off all third-party access by default, allowing only applications that support its security keys. For the time being, that means only Google’s Gmail mail app, Google’s Backup and Sync app, and Google’s Chrome browser.

On an iPhone, for example, you will have to use Google’s Gmail or Inbox apps for email, and on a computer, you can use only the Chrome browser when signing in with a browser. So if you rely on Apple Mail to gain access to your Gmail on an iPhone, or if you use Microsoft Outlook for getting into Gmail on a PC, you’re out of luck. Google says its goal is to eventually allow third-party apps to work with the program, but it is also up to other companies to update their apps to support the keys.

Testing the Security
Despite the drawbacks, security researchers agree that the Advanced Protection Program is a solid piece of security and relatively painless to use, even for everyday use for people outside high-security jobs.

Sabin, the former NSA hacker, who is now a director of network security at GRA Quantum, a security consulting firm, said the physical keys had pros and cons. On one hand, if you lose a key, a hacker would have a hard time figuring out which account it was associated with.

On the other hand, if you lose the keys or don’t have the keys around when you need to log in to a new device, it takes longer to regain access to your account. Google has put in place more elaborate recovery steps for Advanced Protection users, including additional reviews and requests for details about why users have lost access to their account. In our test, we answered security questions to try to recover an account, and Google said it would review the recovery request and respond within a few days.

Runa Sandvik, director of information security at The New York Times, said the keys were not much of a hassle. She said Google’s requirement of using two keys meant you essentially had a spare: If you lose one key, you can get into your account with the remaining key.
But she noted that the keys could get annoying if you used many devices and constantly needed to carry the keys around to log in to your account. That may be an issue for people who work in the technology industry, but most people probably use only one computer and one phone.

Sandvik, who has been testing Google’s program to assess whether to recommend it to the newsroom, said she had not yet discovered vulnerabilities in the security key system outside of the slim possibility that a hacker gained possession of both your password and your key.
“It’s something that is relatively easy to set up once you have both keys,” Sandvik said. “I don’t see a reason you shouldn’t turn this on.”

The Bottom Line
While the security keys are easy to set up and provide tough security, they may be disruptive to your productivity if you rely on apps that are incompatible with the keys.
It took a few minutes for us to migrate to Google’s apps from Apple’s and integrate them into our newsroom workflow, which already relies on Google’s mail, messaging and cloud storage services. But using the keys required sacrificing an important feature — Apple’s VIP alerts, which notify you when people you deem important email you. Google’s iOS apps for Gmail and Inbox lack a similar feature. For people with flooded inboxes, lacking VIP alerts makes sifting through emails time-consuming.

Another example of how the keys can stifle productivity: Many employers still require using the Microsoft Outlook app for email, which won’t work with the keys.

If using Google’s security program would disrupt your work, you may want to wait for more companies to update their apps to support the keys, which rely on a standard called FIDO, for Fast Identity Online. Sabin predicts that many apps will follow Google’s lead.

If you decide to wait, don’t procrastinate on turning on traditional two-factor authentication that relies on text messages. While it is hackable, it is still much safer than relying on a password alone to protect you.

The question is how long it will take security researchers to find a way to hack the physical keys as well. When asked if he had already circumvented physical multifactor authentication devices like Google’s keys, Sabin would offer only: “No comment.”

Google Assistant app on Play Store may be just a widget, but it is winning the AI race

Google Assistant app debuts on the Play Store, but it doesn't do anything more than triggering the service.

Top 7 biggest features of Android O
At a time when the tech world was busy welcoming Google's latest Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones, a new app by the search giant quietly made its debut in the Play Store with the name Google Assistant. The app, however, doesn't bring Google's digital assistant to new devices, but simply triggers it on devices that already have it.
The Play Store listing of the app also clearly states that it doesn't do anything more than what holding the home button will do for you. Yes, the Google Assistant app is nothing but a widget that launches the AI-powered digital assistant.
"The Google Assistant app provides another way to launch the Assistant that's already available on your phone. It allows you to quickly access your Google Assistant with one tap. You can still access your Assistant by pressing and holding down your home button or by simply saying, 'Ok Google'," the Play Store listing reads.
Faster updates
Although the app probably won't interest many people, it will definitely help Google push out software updates faster, without requiring users to rely on server-side releases or update the entire operating system.
Users, who have smartphones running Android Marshmallow, Nougat, or Oreo, can download the Google Assistant app from the Play Store.
Google is winning the AI race
Since its launch with last year's Pixel and Pixel XL, the Google Assistant has been expanded to devices running Android Marshmallow and above. The service now offers plenty of new features, including the customization of how it sounds.
During Wednesday's launch event for the new Pixel 2 series, Google positioned the digital assistant as central to nearly all the newly-unveiled products, including the Pixel Buds wireless earphones, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones, the Home Max and Home Mini smartspeakers, and the Pixelbook laptop computer.

Thanks to the advanced Google Assistant, the new Home speakers can now be configured to recongnise different people from the sounds of their voices, something that neither Apple's Siri nor Amazon's Alexa can perform as of now.
Google Assistant is now also able to work with images. On the new Pixelbook, users can use a stylus to ask the digital assistant to look at images and identify them. In addition, Pixel phone users can use a new feature called "Lens" to allow the assistant access photos captured by the device's camera.
On top of all these, Google Assistant will soon be able to identify songs as well. Google revealed during Wednesday's event that both the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL can constantly identify songs being played around them. While the company didn't explain further, Android Police claimed in a report that the new Pixel 2 devices were apparently running an updated version on Google Assistant with the ability to identify songs.
"It's already functional on the Pixel 2... we were able to confirm it won't be a Pixel 2 exclusive. It will be coming soon to Assistant on your existing device," the report said.
